Why doesn’t Alberta 1st push for immediate independence?
We understand the frustration many Albertans feel—and we share the goal of securing Alberta’s autonomy. We feel that the next next logical step is for Alberta to establish our own Consitution. We must expand our revenue agency, establish an Alberta Police force and create an Alberta Pension plan before rushing into a declaration of independence without a solid legal and institutional foundation would be reckless and counterproductive.
Alberta 1st supports a modern, made-in-Alberta Constitution, approved by Albertans. This document would establish the rights of Albertans, define our institutions, and prepare the province to operate independently if that’s the democratic will of the people in the future.
This isn’t about backing down—it’s about getting it right. Without a clear legal framework, any attempt at independence would fail in the courts and collapse in practice. With a constitution, we create a roadmap that both Albertans and the international community can take seriously.
We believe in self-determination—but we also believe it has to be earned through clarity, structure, and discipline. That’s the foundation we’re building now.
